"M-My..My temple..The..The monks! Why..W-why?! How could this happen?!"
Hnnnnn this is a bit of vent art, and a little bit of Jian story.
He's asleep when his temple is destroyed. Normally when the temple is under attack, the monks would wake him up to defend it. He'd stay awake for a good 9 years, after being awakened, depending on his mood. Then he would sleep again/go back to his home in a side realm.
Well it turns out that the last time the temple was attacked, the monks were unable to get to the gong that would awaken Jian, and their bodies laid around the ruined temple to rot and turn to bone, picked clean by rats.
500-ish years pass, and the ropes that held the gong are so old and brittle, and they could not support the weight, and it falls and rings, waking Jian up. And when he realizes what's happened, he's pretty torn up about it and he blames himself for not being able to feel that the temple was in danger and save his monks.
He mourns for about a hundred years, and then he decides to leave the crumbling temple before the last bits of it fall on top of him, and he's been wandering about ever since, just taking in the sights of the world and such, doing odd little guardian jobs, the occasional quest and such, meditating, and learning how to control fire, which he still hasn't.
Yep, tragic story bit for Jian.
